HISTORY OF THE MPs

Lisa G. and Kasey started the Learn To Play classes a few years back and got back into it this last January 2008 on a pretty much full time basis. A couple of other moms were invited, who in turn invited more moms. After there was about 5 of us out there every Saturday, we threw out the idea of getting jerseys with our kid’s names and numbers on the back. Then the discussion grew even further in that we should get the VOSHA (Valley of the Sun Hockey Association, see www.vosha.com ) colored jerseys as our kids all play for VOSHA. After continuing the conversation, we threw out names; every team has a name and a logo. Kasey came up with the name, envisioned the logo and Gabe drafted it. Then the MP’s were born, right on the bench before LTP practice.

The MP’s started as a group of moms who’s kids already played hockey for the same organization and wanted to learn to play hockey and get together afterwards to hang out. It was fun, footloose and fancy free; no strings attached, time for us not as moms but as ourselves. Then the Hockey for a Cure tournament came up and we signed up and it was fun! We raised money for a great cause; no other team did that. We got an article published in the newspaper with the help of Lisa S. and that brought out more moms. Moms who maybe would have not ever tried to learn hockey if all they had were rec. leagues to choose from as those could seem a little intimidating to new comers.

So, this leads into our vision of what the MP’s future could possibly hold. We become a non-profit that donates/sponsors single moms and single dads who need assistance. We could sponsor the Chrysalis Shelter. They help women, children, and men who have victimized by domestic abuse. Here is their website: http://www.noabuse.org/history.htm
